Many suspension replacement tasks include instructions to the effect that the weight of the car be on the wheels when some of the bolts are tightened for the reason you surmise. You often want bushings which are designed for torquing to be in a neutral position with respect to their limits in each direction in the "at rest" position.
It is often easier to say than do though I'm sure an old style in-ground shop lift that lifted under the wheels would make many of the situations easier. It tough to get too far under the car when it's on the ground.
