You do not have to get under the car, remove the joint or take off the steering wheel (but airbag removal is no problem as long as the ignition is off or battery disconected, just loosen the torx/allen(?) screws in the back, unplug the connector and put it in the back seat). I've done this several times with no codes or explosions!
U-Joint Procedure:
1-Get a hair dryer, some WD-40, and a flashlight.
2-Open driver's door, get on you knees on the ground next to the seat.
3-with flashlight follow steering column to rubber boot at firewall.
4-Pull rubber boot up to get access to U-joint. Slide boot up the column to get it out of the way.
5-Spray u-joint with WD-40 and wipe it down to clean all the crud off.
6-Let dry so you don't start a fire.
7- heat up the joint with the hair dryer for about 15 minutes to loosen up the grease, while you or a helper turns the steering wheel through its range--easier with wheels up.
8- Put the boot back and this fix will last a few years. Winter weather with salt/water/sand seems to bring on the stiffness. In 6 years on a 90 900t, I'm about ready for my second heat treatment.
If the joint is falling apart, then you should replace it. Sobstory usually has some good used ones available at reasonable prices. The dealer part is the whole intermediate shaft with upper and lower joints, you don't need it.
