Has to be pulled off

You really have to pull it off. The glass and the plastic backing is held in place by that ball joint. Be careful: it is quite easy to break the glass if you use too much violence. What I have done is tilting the mirror all the way to the inside, so that you can get your fingers under the outer edges of the glass. This is important because there's a plastic strip attached to the inner side of the backing, as a part of the mirror adjustment mechanism. You could get a thin screwdriver inside and use it to separate the ball from the mirror frame. I've never done it, just pulled out the whole thing.
When attaching the glass back to the backing, make sure you clean the surfaces very well. Do not use anything else than your soft fingers to scratch the glue from the backside of the mirror: it would ruin the reflective material in there! I have used 3M double-sided automotive tape (black) to keep the glass in place, with very good results.
The glasses in both manual and electronic mirrors are similar, but because of different plastics where the glass is attached, it is not an easy swap. You would have to separate the glass from the backing and reattach. Another side note: the mirror glasses in 9000 are interchangeable with 900 ones.
