thought I should say that the car is running and doing fine (more orless)...since it's been pointed out that people only post about the troubles they are having.
Actually I do have a bunch to do on the car but have to wait. It's raining. My garage is full of other stuff. It's the end of a quarter at school so I have stuff to do there. Spring break is next week... want to ski! mountain bike that I need to put back together ASAP. Robin in front yard today... good bike riding weather ahead!
However, I have been keeping up on the posts and also studying diligently both my Haynes and Bentley to see if a head gasket replacement is within the realm of possibilites to do myself since it is probably inevitable. All encouragement welcome.
Other questions I have come up with: (Since much of this is new to me, I don't have much of a frame of reference)
1. Someone asked about gas in oil. How can I tell for sure? ( Smell? Compare to oil in other car that I changed the same day?, go have friend who is more knowledgeble tell me?)
2. Someone asked what color is the smoke and when does it occur? I think it is white but I do not what blue looks like. It is not real thick, it happens at startup and continues at least for awhile...if I am driving I can't see it , if person who is borrowing my car is driving, I guess I could follow behind for awhile....

3. Someone said go have a compression test. Can any good mechanic do that ? We don't have a good iny SAAB mech here and I prefer not ot do business with the dealer here. (nearest SAAB mechs that I kow of so far are 3-4 hours away.)
4. i got straightend out recently on Thermo swith...I had it confused with the AC switch in rad hose. Well, believe it or not I am still having a hard time finding it. (fan is working fine so I don't really need to find it right now. ) Is this permantly attached to rad. Could it be under the part of the air intake tubing that attaches to frame just above rad? This looks like no picture that I have found....BTW, that piece has a split in it ..how bad it that?
5. All the posts about tranny oil make me think I should be doing that, too. Or am I just going to end up with lots of leaking? There is engine oil in there now. Maybe this is NOT the thing to do right now?
5. How many of the problems that I am having now are possibly the result of previous overheating experiences? (gaskets going bad etc.)
6. Creaking/ clicking just started . . .CV joint....could it possibly just be the boot or if the noise has started is it th joint for sure????
7. When I bought the plugs last week I got whatever the nearest Auto Zone had in stock? What should I have, what are okay and what should I NEVER use?
I repeat...car is running nicely right now....in spite of the plethora of problelms of which I am aware. I await all of your valuable and much appreciated input! You are real lifesavers.
