I suspect your wife was driving the SAAB with the key stuck in the "start" position the first time around. It is not unusual for that to happen because the ignition switch is at the low point. It collect dust and debris quite easily. In other words, she was driving the car with the starter teeth engaged to the flywheel. That explains why the electrical anomalies.
It happened to me twice. The first time I didn't know what hit me. Fortunately I was like three miles from home. Indicator lights didn't work, among other strange electrical anomalies. Unfortunately, since the next time I took the car out everything went back to normal, I didn't found out the cause.
The second time I drove it for like five miles and it blew out the starter. That's when I realized what caused it. It wouldn't start again. The car was towed home. The only damage, fortunately, was the starter.
I'd clean the ignition area periodically.
