I received my Nines in the mail a couple days ago and contrary to popular wisdom have not dropped everything to read it cover to cover...stretching it out. Read Townsend's article last night and enjoyed it and recommend it to all.
It's subtle in one way, and yet hits you upside the head in others, essentially bemoaning the fact that the average car character is moving upscale to cars that he has no business (or inclination or motivation or comprehension or talent) with because he doesn't have the slightest idea of the maintenance requisite to a quality automobile...you can't get away with doint $20 oil changes for the three years of a Saab lease and expect the car to last 20 years...the first years (and indeed ALL years) are important if you want service-to-service reliability and durability.
This is a point that I've dropped on my wife for years...her attitude (as referenced by our recent Audi lease) is drive them for 39months, take them back to the dealer as required (every 9K on this lease) and get another one when lease is up. She simply cannot grasp the roughly $2k per year on the old 87 900T (so far this year it's about $1500 counting the new front fenders and the SPG9 AID and the assorted electrical connectors and new headlight wiring scheme for 100/130 H4 ceramic base bulbs...).
Anyway, I digress. Highly recommended reading for 'Masters of 'chinery' as my dear Norwegian foster mother would have said....
