Take a look at the wires going to the starter. They loose their insulation and short to the large hot wire going to the alternator. This keeps the solonoid engaged. Not a hard fix. You'll understand once you check out the wires. You may have to use a razor to cut open the plastic sheeth containing the wiring harness.
email me if you get stuck. I had this happen on one of my 84's also.
I had to replace the large wire going from alternator to starter. I also replaced the last 9-12" of wire going to each terminal on the solonoid.
That was two years ago. I just last week took the drivetrain out of the car to switch it from an auto to a 5spd. It looks as if a few other spots in the harness need attention. The engine wiring harness has really broken down over the the last four years. ( I put a used auto in it 4 years ago and the harness was okay.)
Whats funny is that I also own an 85, and the wiring harness is perfect in it. Many people say 85's have loads of wiring harness problems.
Good luck
Aaron
