short shift to minimize the crunch, light load, and slight hesitation in neutral position.

one contributor to problem is very large rpm drop from 1 to 2, vs other shifts.

for heavy duty gear oils, I found neo75-90HD is not bad in 2nd gear crunch, but not many others have tried it.

for your case, Honda has special gear oil .. MTF, sold thru dealers, that was recently designed for their gearboxes, replacing previous 10W30 oil spec for smoother shifting. 75W80 GL4 gear oil, sem-synthetic, best guess.
