Since you are saying to put the shim in first, I guess you are referring to a spindle that already had shims and that the new bearing was mic'd to compare to old thickness. It would seem more logical to press the new bearing in and then see how much space had to be taken up with a shim before replacing the second ring. Anyway, I have used blue loctite to hold the bearings on two 900's without shims and have had no problems following Townsend's recommendation.
