My ’87 900 turbo continues to fail California smog test due to excess hydrocarbons at idle. It passes the 2500 RPM portion, however. The readings of the exam are:
(at 2500 RPM) My Car Maximum Allowable Average for Cars that Pass
Hydrocarbons (ppm) 41-ppm 140-ppm 41-ppm
CO% .31% 1.00% .1%
CO2% 10.1% NA NA
O2% 6.6% NA NA
(At Idle) My Car Maximum Allowable Average for Cars that Pass
Hydrocarbons (ppm) 193-ppm 120-ppm 29-ppm
CO% .14% 1.00% .10%
CO2% 7.5% NA NA
O2% 10.2% NA NA
My o2 sensor is new and my fuel pressure regulator, throttle position indicator and idle control valve check out as OK. My air mass meter resistance is 383 ohms as well.
The o2 sensor cycles properly when attached to the computer but reads near-zero volts when disconnected from the computer (at idle). If I put propane into the intake the voltage will jump up to .9V and then fall back to zero.
Everything I have read indicates that these reading point to a massive air leak into the system but I am unable to find even a slight leak (vacuum or otherwise).
The car has 180,000 miles but still runs strong. This car passed smog 2yrs and 20,000 miles ago so I don’t think that worn engine is the culprit.
As I am stumped, any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Dave
