Check the timing first. If it is set at specified setting, check the output on the O2 sensor in circuit with a digital volt meter (not analog as the input impedance may not be high enough). It will tell you a couple of things about the operation of the engine. If it is not active (oscillating between 0.2 and 0.8 with an average of ~0.5, it is not in 'lambda' mode. If it is not moving and reads low, it could be the pre-heater or the o2 sensor has ceased to be. if so, replace it. Checking the O2 sensor out of circuit doesn't say a whole lot. If it is reading solid and high, the system is rich and that needs to be diagnosed. A rich condition is generally an indicator of a bad AMM IF and I mean IF all other components are fine. A heavy fluctuating idle is also a classic symptom of a bad AMM. Still, it is cheaper to check all of the other components first. You say the fuel pressure valve works. Have you actually measured fuel pressure in the header? If it is OK at idle, it may drop as power increases and lead to a clogged fuel filter. If it is low at idle, it could be a split hose or other fuel system failure inside the fuel tank (fuel pump).
