Building a paint booth..... Posted by Walt [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Paint, mike 87 900s, Wed, 14 Mar 2001 16:38:45 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
There's a how-to at http://www.autobodystore.com.
Also this months Car Craft (April) has a feature on painting your car at home.
I've done a few paint jobs at home, it is ALOT of work, and still pretty expensive. But the results were excellent, and the satisfaction, priceless!
Material costs to do my '66 Skylark added up to over $600, as follows:
Epoxy primer $140
Primer surfacer $92
Base color $132
Urethane clearcoat $170
Misc solvents $50
This is for quality materials. I went for a urethane basecoat/clearcoat. There are lower cost options available, a simple Enamel job could be done for half that. But final appearance and durability are compromised.
Safety issues are also a very important concern. Modern paints are very hazardous to your health. Don't even think of spraying a car without a supplied air respirator (about $300). A cartridge style filter just won't cut it anymore. And an improperly built paint booth could be a bomb waiting to go off. Also consider your neighbors- it can really ruin your day when the cops show up after the first coat asking you to stop, or else...
I'd go along with the other's recommendations. Do the prep work yourself, then get a pro to shoot it. Or at least rent a paint booth to shoot it in.
