Dee,
The glove box is pretty much part of the dashboard so,the dash must be removed.
I too have cut the back part of the glove box to fit a new speaker with a much bigger magnet.If you remove the dash you might be able to see+measure
how much space you have.
I put my cd changer under the passengers seat.It gives me an excuse to reach down when a pretty girl sits in my car.

btw there is a metal cross member behind the glove box but,the back of the glove box pretty much clears it.
