Anyone had a 2.0L with a rod knock?

I'm coming over from the 9k board as I thought some folks here might have some more experience. I fear the worst for my poor '87 9kT. She has 245k and has developed a noise that could definitely be characterized as a knock. It's hard to pinpoint, but it seems suspiciously loud down by the oil pan. The noise is present at idle and increase with rpm until it either stops or is drowned out at higher RPM. This is definitely not a lifter (the noise sounds too deep) and has only appeared recently. It is running a 10W30 synthetic blend but has had only 10W40 dino in the recent past, changed regularly for its entire life. I will try switching to 20W50 and seeing if the noise disappears (though I know this will only prolong the inevitable at best.) Has anyone replaced the rod bearings in-car? It doesn't seem like it would be too hard once you get the pan off. Compression is still good all around. I remain optimistic as I haven't heard of anyone else with Saab rod bearing issues. Any thoughts are appreciated.
