I went out and ran the car for a few minutes today to try to further diagnose my suspected rod knock. I wanted to be sure that’s what it is before I tear down the engine. For those who missed the first post, it’s a ‘87 9kT with 245k. The engine started and ran fine for several minutes with the oil pressure light extinguishing right after start up as it always has. I placed some load on the engine at this point with no knock. However, after a few more minutes and applying load again it started knocking. Once it started knocking, however, it sounded the same whether I was applying load or not, which isn’t what I would have expected. Further more, I tried pulling spark plug wires expecting for the knock to diminish or disappear when I found the knocking cylinder (since combustion would no longer be pounding down the piston/rod.) However, this produced no change in the frequency/loudness of the knock. If I shut down the engine and restarted it (even immediately) the knock disappeared until I applied more load. Basically, some of these conditions seem consistent with a rod knock and some don’t. Especially removing spark having no effect on the knock. Could this noise be consistent with a spun main bearing? That’s a condition that I’m personally unfamiliar with. I might make an appointment with Swedish Imports which is very nearby to get a profession opinion. I know there’s no way to really tell short of tearing down the whole engine, but I want to be fairly certain before attempt to do anything. Any thoughts greatly appreciated! I’m getting tired of walking and at least want the piece of mind of knowing what is wrong.
Thanks again,
Craig
