Where is this water coming from? (not HCV)

I replaced my heater control valve about two weeks ago after reading about that it is usually the cause of wet driver's side floorboards. Well, even after I did that, the dang thing is still pretty wet - I thought maybe I didn't get the HCV to seal properly, but felt up around the connection and it was dry - no leaks (there, anyway).
To make a long story short - I removed the trim pieces around the driver's side carpet/door, pulled my carpet back, stuck my hand under there, and the thing had a puddle of water underneath the thick, lined black rubber mat that itself is underneath the carpeting. I peeled the carpet and mat back, and sure enough, water - notice I said water, NOT antifreeze/water mix. How can this water get in there? I felt for cracks/rust spots, holes, etc and found none. Doesn't have an odor (other than musty water).
Has anyone had this problem? How did you fix it? My guess is that there is some kind of drain hose somewhere that has gotten severed or stopped up.
Oh, while we're under the carpet, what is the wiring harness that is attached to the floorboard, under the mat which is under the carpet?!?! Looks like the wires trailed off to underneath the console. There was even a cut out in the black lined mat to where you could get to it without having to pull the mat up (just the carpet). Diagnostic connections!?
thanks for any help in advance,
Rob Catron
