I have an 8-valve 900S that I bought new in 1981. I also have a 91 Turbo, but I refuse to part with my 81 and have been restoring it. I guess only you can say if yours is worth restoring. Here is what I've done:
Rebuilt engine - cylinders bored, new pistons and rods with crankshaft and everything balanced. Intake manifold and head was ported and flowed, installed new high-rev dual valve springs and 8500 RPM camshaft. Changed to a Weber racing throttle body and a K&N air filter. Sent the transmission off to Eriksson where they put a new pinion bearing housing and larger bearing. Upgraded clutch to heavier duty unit.
Installed Jamex sport springs (very stiff) with a pair of Air-Lift PolyAir springs in rear. Replaced steering rack, but still need new poly bushings for the shocks and sway bars. I have a set of braided stainless brake lines to put in.
Car now runs better now than the day I bought it. I'm now about to add a header, and SPG9's 2-1/2 stainless steel exhaust system which should further improve performance.
Overall it is more responsive - the low end has more torque and the high end has power to about 6500 RPM. In the near future I'll be changing the ignition to an MSD 6-AL unit and coil which should help with the power on the high end. I am thinking of putting a 130 amp alternator from a 9000.
Have recovered front seats and replaced headliner. Dash still needs replacing due to cracks, but might just get an ABS cap from SAS instead.
A short shifter, high quality paint job, new set of tires and a killer stereo are the last things on my list - at least for now anyway.
