Well, kind of stupid I guess, but unless you like changing oil/filters, do it before you go. Like a couple days before, so if something like a loose filter or drain plug happens you can fix it. If synthetic is your bag, fageddabout it.
Check all the belts and hoses...expecially go around the engine and tighten/check all the hoseclamps. I drive my 87 900T everyday and was confident it would take me 11 hours nonstop to Tremblant...yeah, except for a loose hoseclamp on the turbocharger compressor hose (heard it pop and KNEW something on the pressure side let go!)
Take a quart of oil and a gallon of antifreeze with. Don't worry about alternator/water pump belts...you've got two of them and they're not likely to go if all the belts are replaced on a 4 year 60K schedule. Check your upper radiator hose...if it's soft or hard, replace it. Same with lower radiator hose...it should be 'just right'.
Pressure test your cooling system...the caps are often dying. You should have the current two valve (look under the cap) system or you're on borrowed time (could be quite a long time but...).
If you haven't bypassed your radiator fan timer relay, be ready to do so on the road. Normal hand tools and some electrical tape work for field repair.
Check your brakes if you have more than about 20K on them. Make sure your ebrake isn't hanging up. Check brake fluid/level. Have the alignment checked/fixed and check for bent rims...vibration for hours on end is a real pain! Look at/check the CV joint and inner driver boots, especially the one on the exhaust side, for rips/tears/leaks and repair accordingly.
It's going to be warm in New Orleans or anywhere on the Gulf...hope your a/c is working!
Enjoy the trip!
