Anecdotally, I'd never heard of the problem before I moved from upstate NY where an 82C thermostat was an unknown. I experienced it with the first car I bought in SE PA, though.
BTW, Kevin, I measured the preload on three more high mileage pinion bearing assemblies that had not yet begun to fail. I don't think there was in in-lb of rolling resistance between the three of them. As an observation, the M89- larger rear pinion bearing seems to greatly extend the life of many of the later gearboxes. Unfortunately the 1/2 fork becomes the weaker link along with the 2nd and third gear synchronizers. One had over 120 thousanths off the fork and two shot synchros. All forward gears and the synchro sleeves were trashed as a result except for fifth. Maybe there was a bad clutch pedal in the mix on that one as the other one looked sweet except for a similar fork on 1/2. Shifting style obviously plays a role on the synchro life.
