Mike,
I had funky early morning symptoms with my 88 900S, also. It was spotty, like every quarter turn it would feel like it got stiff. Well I followed Monster's instructions and flushed my power steering fluid, and then heated the U-joint and sprayed it with pb-blaster. My steering has been smooth as silk ever since!! I thought I needed a new rack too!
Good luck!
-Jake
