rally motor mount

Due to severe tearing of the stock rubber motor mounts on our '85 900T performance rally car, I made a new front motor mount by cutting solid pieces of rubber conveyor belt material and using it with the stock metal pieces. I modified the stock side mounts by filling in the openings with wooden popcicle sticks and rtv. During Cherokee Trails, the front motor mount came completely apart. The rubber is still intact, but the eared washers for the bolt that hold the whole thing in the car are throughly chewed up and were not in their proper place when I finally got time to take the mount out. My guess is that the steel tube in the center of the mount slid back and forth while driving and this bent the bracket and washers. Or I just did not tighten everything properly. There is evidence of the tube moving within the rubber however. Anybody have any further thoughts?
Thanks, Richard M
