The plot thickens. My SAAB has big miles, approx 206K. I have had a look at all the control arm bushings, tie rod ends and ball joints and they all appear reasonable, and don't have any excess movement or leaking grease etc. I returned the car to the mechanic who after an inspection came to the same conclusion that everyting "appears" OK and he can't explain why the steering is all over the place now. I've rotated all the tyres and that didn't help and the car is nearly undrivable at 55mph and above. As a last resort I am going to have the mechanic take the alignment back to its original position as a starting point and see how it behaves there, then work the problem again. It just might be possible that the car has been driven so long with excess toe out that it has assymetrically worn something. From my understanding of the wheel alignment specs for the SAAB they appear to be pretty normal ie no unusual alignment requirements. If you have any further ideas please let me know, this is as frustrating as all get out.
