One idea; might help. In trying to track down a vacuum leak, I took a look at the white plastic vacuum chamber, located under the hood, along the passenger fender wall, behind steering fluid reservoir. One my two cars (86 900S, 85 900T) there's a check valve on top, onto which a vacuum tube is connected. I pryed the top of the valve off (after first denting the fender sheet metal with a hammer so I could pull the canister up to a workable level without removing the power steering reservoir). There's a spring underneath, along with a rubber washer that the spring pushes on to maintain vacuum. Could this be leaking on your car? My vent controls were acting strangly (similar to yours, but not exactly the same). After putting some vacuum grease on this washer, and refitting all the vacuum connections (cut the ends off and reseat), my vent control works correctly. One note - when you take off that plastic top, you may have to rotate it first, which may destroy a washer shaped rubber ring. I think this ring of rubber is just to keep dirt out - I replaced it with a plastic washer. Sorry this is long. Let me know what you find out. Thanks.
