extra gauges/electrical ?'s

Any recommendations on where to get extra voltometer, oil pressure and oil temperature gauges?
Also I just bought a radar detector that I'd like to splice directly into the power system. Installation instructions say I need a switched wire, one that has no current when the car is off and running 12V when the car is started. I'm looking to do the splice somewhere around the driver's side windshield pillar and run the wire up and over the windshield to have it come out just to the left of the rear view mirror. Where's the best place to do the splice, and what identifying marks on the wire should I look for (i.e., color, silkscreened load specs, etc.)?
While I'm at it, what's the difference, electrically speaking, between the middle position on the ignition (i.e., when the radio and dash lights come on) and the running position (just before turning over to "start", when the headlights, warning lights, etc. come on)? If the headlights are off is power consumption the same between the two positions?
Thanks
Bry M.
