Inner Cv joint was changed in 85 in 16V turbos and the rest of the line in 86. But the drivers can be easily swapped. You also don't want a gearbox with the final digits of the GM # lower than 10 as it will not have internal centering on the gear selector gates. As usual, there is a workaround but it's not worth it unless you have access to a free, or nearly so, known (read:rebuilt) early trans.

Be sure to look for a used trans from a car that was wrecked, not one that is in the yard for no apparent reason. It will increase the chances that the trans is worth grabbing.
