For the last six months, my car was having an intermittent starting problem and also would boost extremely erratically. Driving it was hell. I made the mistake of taking it to all of the bad mechanics first, who apparently messed it up so bad that the most reputable place in town wouldn't even touch it. Turns out that one of the bad guys replaced the hose that goes to the Idle control valve with a collapsable heater hose. The sheer force of the vacuum caused the hose to cave in and made the car idle erratically and cause random no-starts. So it was replaced with non-collapsable hose that I got from napa- autozone doesn't sell it. Then after many visits to many poor mechanics and a well reputed one who wouldn't even touch it, I broke down and took it to the dealer, Kelley Cadillac Saab Subaru in Chattanooga Tn. Brian Robinson worked on the car and had it fixed in an hour after six long months of torture. Said that someone messed with the timing in order to compensate for some other problem the car was having some time back.
What I learned: Good saab techs are hard to find. Don't let a redneck touch my car, and it's much cheaper and faster at the dealer than you probably think ($94) unless you live up north and have some competent saab independents.
