broken lower control arms

Given enough time all "classic 900" lower control arms break at the rear weld.(usually while reversing in a turn) Does anyone have a "fix" for this problem and is there a heavy duty model available anywhere. I replaced one that had broken at 60 mph the other day and the guy was lucky to live! Is it possible to beef up the factory junk before it breaks?
