While I was out of town our 90 900S died while my wife was taking our son to a Soccer game. (About 200 yards from the field, so all the Soccer Dads came over to help.) It would start and run if jumper cables were connnected but died as soon as disconnected. Got it towed home and figured the Alt was bad but could not understand why the "battery" light on the dash didn't come on as a warning. I charged the battery and put the key in the "on" position before starting the car and noticed the light did not come on. Pulled the bulb and it was good. Went to the Townsend site and learned if the "battery" light does not come on it means either the brushes in the Alt. are bad or the ground wire from the Alt. to the motor mount is broken. Checked and sure enough the wire was broken. Fixed the wire and ran another to be sure. Started it up and all was OK. Hot diggetty! a Saab repair for <$1.00. Thank You Tom!
So let this be a lesson to all, check to make sure the red "battery" light
comes on before you start the car. If it does not, you will get no warning before all the electrons are depleted from your battery with possible adverse effects to domestic tranquility.
