The grooves that the yolk slides in widen with age. This causes the yolk to tilt in the grooves. When driving forwards, it tilts forward and stays that way, so no clunking. When you start reversing and apply breaks, it tilts backward, and clunks. Then you go forward again, and it tilts forward, clunking again.
I've seen two different fixes. My rebuilt calipers that I've just bought have sheet steel inserts padding out the yolk. I'm not sure how long that will last.
On a previous car, I welded/ground back the yolk, so that it fits tighter. This was great initially, with no clunk at all. But it only lasted a couple of thousand miles, then started clunking. When I looked at them, you could see that it had just worn down again.
So nowadays, I just live with it, knowing that it's pretty harmless. It's also fun because it scares anyone who hasn't driven a 900 before.
