I have had a cold start problem REALLY BAD ever since taking my '85 900 Turbo to my local Saab independant due to a problem which was later diagnosed as an intermittantly sticky AIC valve. While they were trying to find the AIC valve problem, they replaced my AMM. Apparently they didn't do any CO adjustment to the AMM (it's the old -005 AMM with the potentiometer on it), because beginning the morning after I started having bad cold-start problems. I took the car back and they told me they fixed it and that it was due to a vacuum line which was knocked off. I took them at their word for it, but the next day discovered the problem still there. I did some research and found at Townsend's website a description of the EXACT problem that I've been having (see link below for Townsend's website article). Townsend diagnoses it as a CO adjustment problem with my -005 AMM. However, in Townsend's description, he links to a PDF file which is a few pages from a Saab service manual. In those few pages, it tells you to use equipment such as a CO meter and exhaust extraction equipment. These are obviously a few items that the basic home mechanic don't have access to. I tried to take this article back to my Saab independant and he told me that they never have to do that adjustment and don't even have a CO meter or anything. I was going to take the car to a friend of my dad who has access to a Lincoln/Mercury dealer service center's equipment and just do the job myself according to the PDF document, but then I noticed the article also calls out for some Saab-specific special tools, such as a "pulse ratio meter 83 93 597" and "evaporator housing 83 94 132". Where the Sam Hill would I get these? I'm not going to buy Saab special tools for a one-time job! Is there any way to make this adjustment without using this equipment and special tools? The problem is only until the car warms up, so I believe that when my oxygen sensor takes over its duties at 600 degrees F, it's working correctly. Also, a few months ago when I had the car in the shop for its 120,000 mile service they told me that they tested the oxygen sensor and it was fine - no need for replacement. Of course, this WAS the SAME mechanic I spoke of above, but why would he lie and say it works when he could make more money replacing it? Any help would be great! Thanks in advance to any and all who reply!
