Exhaust manifold gasket leak

This is the third time that I've tried to fix an exhaust manifold gasket leak but after a few thousand miles it alwayus starts to leak again.
The previous owner let the leak go on for a while and the hot blowing exhaust gases have led to a slight uneveness on the surface of the cylinder head that mates with the exhaust manifold. I really don't want to take the cylinder head off and get this surface machined so is there any semi-permanent repair that can be done.? For example, is there any exhaust sealant that can be used that will last and withstand the temps.?
Thanks,
Tomee
