On an '80, the windows should be chromed, not black. Black wasn't until '82 or something. The hatch should have brake lights - in 1979 they did not, but in 1980 they did. As for the problem, I'd almost summarily rule out a timing chain - it's a duplex chain and very resistant to stretching and skipping... of course, the tensioner could have failed, but you should be able to check for that quite easily. My bet is either a failed head gasket or a cracked head - they are notorious for cracking between the #2 and #3 exhaust valves. Who knows, maybe you have both problems! Another possibility is that it just needs a valve job really badly, but I'd say that's reasonably unlikely... ;) At any rate, first step is to pull the head off, inspect it, have it pressure checked, and valves clearances set/checked. That should give you your answer!
