>I tried giving the car gas (lots of it) and did not smell any. Should I?
Just got my first Saab a few months ago, but with fuel injected cars I've played with, when you give it gas via the pedal during startup, the system actually feeds less fuel to the car. I haven't dealt with that on my car yet, so I can't confirm it...
>My thought is fuel pump (180xxx miles) how do I test it?
First, check the fuse. It should be clearly labeled in the fuse block which I assume is under the hood on the 90 models, as with my 85. Next, attach your timing light to the spark wires and make sure you have a spark while you're turning the car over (the light won't flash if you don't have a spark...likely indicating a coil failure). Next, grab a friend and pull up the panels on the floor in the back of the car and open the fuel pump access hatch (it looks like the top of a paint can without the wires coming out of it). Have your friend try to start the car while you bend down and listen to the pump. There is usually a bit of gear noise that comes from it when it is functioning that is not very easy to hear unless you have all that stuff uncovered. While things are uncovered, take a multimeter and make sure there is power getting to the leads going into the pump. If there is, and if you really want to make sure the pump is the culprit, I would remove the fuel line going into the fuel filter and put it into a proper receptacle - something that won't squirt fuel all over the place if the pump is working. Turn the car over. You should get fuel pumping out of the fuel line. When doing this YOU MUST have a fire extinguisher handy in the event something nasty happens - otherwise, just don't do this step.
>What do they cost?
New, about $300. Total cost, including the secondary pump is something like $350, I think. I bought a used one for $75 from one of the folks who sponsor this board.
>How hard to install?
Piece of cake. Just installed one last week and it took 20 minutes total. It is a little weird to understand what you're told to do using Haynes or Chilton - I suspect the Bentley manual is a bit more specific (gotta get me one'a those). To put it in perspective, however, I build race cars - so I'm pretty confident working on cars...I've heard folks on this list say about 45 minutes for a novice.
