Why does my SPG run like a truck?

this is the first of a two part series, the second being "why does my spg *ride* like a truck... but that will follow.
i have to admit that i haven't been the _best_ saab owner. i change the oil religiously, but i do most of my own repairs/maintenance and often let things slide. like tune ups.
so... i have an 89 spg with a slightly tweaked apc box, 128k miles (32 in last two years). i use 93 octane fuel. i have been on the wait list at bill jacobson's place since i bought the car almost 2 years ago (!). it hasn't been tuned in about a year and a half.
the symptoms: it hunts at idle, but pretty smoothly. it bounces off the rev limiter more easily than it once did. it idles a little bit roughly (to the ears as well).
before i start throwing parts at it (i've considered plugs, wires, and a new o2 sensor to start), what do you think it is? as simple as the timing?
Thanks for your help,
Ryan
