>>>I am about to change the oil in my 1983 900. I am thinking of switching to synthetic. Is there anything I should do before I put the stuff in there, I think normail oil has been used until now. Are there any cases when synthetic shouldn't be used?

I recommend using a good engine flush (AMSOIL or BG make the best I know of). If you don't, or won't, flush, then watch for any sudden increase in oil consumption after a couple of thousand miles. If you see that, change the oil filter and top off. I wouldn't put synthetic oil into an engine that has a huge buildup of sludge or is leaking noticeably. Don't use synthetic if doing so will double the value of the engine.

>>>How often should I change my oil filter?

Depends on what filter and what synthetic. If you use one of the better synthetics (AMSOIL, Mobil 1) and plan to extend the drain interval, then use a good filter. AMSOIL has a service life of 25,000-35,000 miles OR 1 year, with AMSOIL filter change at 6 months OR 12,500 miles (other filters 7500 miles/6 months). I would not hesitate to use Mobil 1 for 15,000 miles OR 1 year, filter change at 6 months. I would not try to extend the drain interval with any of the other sytnhetics unless I used oil analysis.

>>>What brand synthetic should I get?

See above.

>>>Will there be any noticable changes in the way the engine runs after I switch?

It will probably run cooler under load, start easier in winter (if you have cold winters), may gain a bit of fuel economy, and (though you may not notice it) will give you much greater protection in case of a problem.
