trans oil question

I have a 1986 SPG w/ 267,000 kms. It had a rebuilt 1991 manual trans put in about 3-4 years ago and has had regular gear oil in it ever since. It is hard to shift to 2nd when the car is cold, and I was thinking of putting synthetic in it. I went to the Townsend site and in one of his tech documents he says that putting any oil in after gear oil shortens the expected life of the tranny. Is this true? Should I just leave the gear oil in it? It's clean, so that doesn't seem to be a concern.
thanks in advance.
