Yep, I do!
Roddo, yours sounds like a classic case of a sinking float. The float gets soggy, usually as a result of alcohol absorption, and then the gauge reads low.
Theoretically, you COULD fix it, by replacing that little float. The labor, effort, and quest for the proper replacement component would probably not make it worth your while. The units are meant to be changed out, and it's a common problem. If you want to fiddle with it, just unscrew the little teensy nut on the bottom of the sender unit and slide it out of its cylinder -- you'll see what you're up against. Some problems, like a bent or broken contact or broken resistance wire, are fixable. The sinking float problem isn't practical to fix, in my own humble opinion.
I'd recommend you abandon your old fuel gauge sender unit and get a new one. I got one from SobStory last year for under $50. Easy job to replace it, too.
