I recently replaced my beat OE swaybar outer bushings with poly ones. The jumble of noises I'd become accustomed didn't vanish but it did definitely change. Knowing that all BJs, shock bushings etc. were sound, I decided to look at my engine mounts. I found a beat one on the exhaust side and replaced it. But the silence I was anticipating wasn't my reward. The remaining sounds were horrendous, audible on every excursion of the suspension, no matter how small. The sound could be produced by pushing down at each front corner. I suffered with it for a week. Finally with the assistance of a friend I determined that it was being produced by the sway bar in the new outer bushings. You couldn't help but notice how tight they fit; I've never gotten any on w/o punching a hole in the end to release the compressed air. Because of the very tight fit, essentially no lubricant stays in there to lubricate the sway bar during it's normal rotational movement. I tried to scored the interior with a wire brush in a drill but they only stayed quiet (absolutely silent!) for 3 weeks. I'm trying to come up with a way to cut an ~1/8" deep v-shaped helical groove on about 1/4" centers the length of the interior to allow grease to be injected, and retained, through the "breather" hole in the end. Looking for an Exacto /leatherworking tool with the cutter tip perpendicular to the handle to do it.
The sound is quite unlike the squeaky noise one migh expect from such movement. Sounds much more like really bad balljoints.
