The 85-87 front caliper design is quite poor. The whole mechanism flexes and moves. Never possible to have a truly hard bottom brake pedal and the clunk from the outer frame where it slide through the caliper body gets worse with the age of the rebuild.
I had one get sticky and then freeze up and overheat on the hwy. A self-destruction issue - a little heat from a minor pad retract problem becomes a big freeze up as the rotor expands into the pads. Bad situation, hard on wheel bearings too. I believe it was the original caliper (13 years old). Wasn't from the parking brake lever or cable adjustment. Probably the usual piston retract problem with age and corrosion.
FYI - I adjust the parking cable so the cable lever retracts all the way to the stop, not to the 0.5mm clearance specified in Bentley. This reduces the chance of cable retraction problems later and parking brakes still hold on hills.
