Before you try to figure out too many things, try a couple cans of techrolene or a bottle of Amsoil PI in the gas tank to try and clean up the combustion chamber carbon deposits. Alternatively, find some place where you run the car for an hour or so at 80mph+ or 4K preferably 5K rpms. Remarkable what a good highway run can clean out.
Every once in awhile I like to run the car to top end rpm or where it shoots ducks/misses, whichever comes first. If it misses at a certain rpm, I'll back off a few hundred for a few minutes, then run it up again until it burns clean.
If this doesn't work, then it's off to the garage to check plugs (gap, condition, age, replace them at 30K w/NGK if you know what's good for the engine!), distributor cap/rotor, and plug wires. Bougicord every 4 years or 60K miles, same with rotor and cap. Check the timing (14-16degrees BTDC...make sure you have the right index on the bell housing cover) and the vacuum advance/pressure retard can for proper operation.
Sometimes there's nothing to do but pull the head and decarbon the combustion chamber or replace the burned valve(s)...but take the time to get the combustion chambers borescoped before doing that! If you can't find someone with a borescope, they're currently running about $350 for a decent one from Harbor Freight.
