The belts can be a bit tricky. I still have problems and I take my belts off all the time. what I've been doing latley is to totally remove the adjustment bolt so that the alternator has total freedom to move them push that mother up against the block, use a pry bar if you must but be very very careful not to damage anything, and work the belts off. hope I helped. Let me stress be carefull prying because there are all kinds of wires and brake lines and master cylinders and stuff that you don't want to damage.
