Sounds like the level sender in the gas tank is getting old. I swapped a used one into my 1983 from a newer car at a "recycler" - it was a very easy swap. The level sender is located under the wooden trunk floor on the passenger side. Slide the floor panels to the rear to remove.
Three tips:
1. Do it when the tank level is low.
2. Disconnect the battery, don't smoke, well ventilated area, etc!!!!
3. If you get a used sender, get the ring (looks like a big bottlecap) that holds it in place too. There was a slight difference in the mounting for the newer sender which required this piece to work.
