it may be worth grabbing a cylinder compression tester from an auto parts store. not too expensive. you just pop out the spark plug, screw in the tester and crank the engine. pretty simple test. it is completely feasible that one of your cylinders piston rings have gone bad and you are not getting compression in that cylinder. if that's the case, it won't fire, which would prove your mechanic correct. you can also check by opening the oil dip stick tube while the engine is running, put the palm of your hand over the hole. you shouldn't feel air pushing out, or you shouldn't get oil spraying out with each piston stroke. (same thing will happen with a cracked piston btw; probably not the case) if you have bad compression, you will need to pull the engine, but you can normally rebuild an old one. i do agree that it is worth a second opinion, but certainly check these few things first, before giving someone else money.
