I agree with Ed. However, to answer your question directly, each new oil filter comes with a new rubber seal. Sometimes when the oil filter is changed, the old rubber seal sticks to the block. If not removed before the new filter and seal is put on, the old seal will cause a really, really big oil leak. I would hope that this is not the type of leak you are describing. I had it happen once on my old van when we were towing the 99 rally car to a solo race. All 5 quarts of oil in the van engine were dumped onto the exhaust pipe in less than 2 miles of driving. As we made into the service station, the smoke quit and my wife said "Did the leak fix itself?" My response was "No, the engine is now out of oil." :-)
Or what does it mean when a Triumphed engine 99 quits dripping oil on the garage floor? Answer: It's out of oil.
