I replaced the cannister, got another one from a TSN sponsor. I gave it the test specified in the Bentley, and it the diaphram works (in the old one too.) So I am puzzled about it. I guess I will try to pry the top off the old one to visually inspect it. It just started recently (making the noise), although I had idle problems previously. It seems strange that swapping cannisters had no effect on the noise. I jammed a spark plug in the hose (just the right size!), and wha-laa, smooth running car. I certainly to not want to contribute hazardous fumes to the atmosphere, but the grumble of a Kirby vacuum is not my idea of a melodious automobile sound. Thanks guys, I will let you know what I find.
By the way ,I priced a hand vacuum at a parts store, 35 bucks, is this the going price?
Chris
