If you are feeling really brave, what I would personally recommend doing is locating the yellow wire that goes to the starter - you should be able to see it under the intake manifold. Grab a pair of jumper cables, and attach one end to the lug on the starter that this yellow wire attaches to, and the other end to the battery. Theoretically, the moment it touches the battery the starter should turn over - with that in mind, make SURE the car is in neutral and be sure you're wearing protection on your hands to prevent any rogue electricity using you as a ground point. You want to have the key off for this, or the car will try to start (assuming it works :).
If this causes the starter to turn over, you've got one of two problems: Either the ignition switch is dead (entirely possible, BTW) or the wiring between the ignition switch and the starter is dead (less likely). Anecdotally, the former happened to my '85 900T, and the latter to my 1980 900T.
If it doesn't work, you could have a host of other problems - from a completely dead battery to a major wiring problem. Personally, I would not be surprised if it was something simple like perhaps a bad alternator or a bad battery ground - this too happened to me on my '85 900T. :) If you have a voltmeter, check the battery voltage to make sure you've got +12v there... If you don't have a voltmeter, but have some wire you can just grab a light bulb from somewhere in the car and connect it to the battery - it should glow brightly; if it doesn't you need a new battery. And, if you need a new battery you want to check ground points as well as the alternator to make sure neither was the cause of the dead battery.
Good mechanics in the Bay, in my order of preference:
Swedish Auto Factory in San Jose
B&B Saab (dealer) in Santa Clara
Saab Replay in Berkeley (IIRC)
Planet SAAAB I think is downtown, or nearby - haven't been there in years
If things aren't looking up by the weekend, feel free to let me know as I'll be heading to San Jose on Saab business and may be able to bring parts if you need them... I'm on a mission to clean out my garage of Saab parts I don't need any longer... :)
