Voltage regulator/alternator problems/questions..................

Okay, so here's the thing. I replaced the voltage regulator last night on my '88 SPG, after it had stranded me on the road and I had to have it towed. Got the old one off and a guy in my auto repair class used a dentist type mirror and said "uh-oh... your alternator's shot." He said that the brushes from the VR had worn a grove into the slip rings on the armiture of the alternator and in fact may have actually worn through the slip ring. Nonetheless, I had no choice but to replace the VR since the brushes on the old were maybe 1/4" whereas the new one's brushes were closer to 3/4". After installing the new one, we started up the car and the dash light was off and the car was running fine. A quick test of the alternator demonstrated that the alternator was charging fine.
That leads me to my question... Are the groves normal? Am I going to damage anything if I don't replace the alternator? My intuition says that I'll probably wear out the VR quickly, but on the other hand, maybe the groves are normal? What color are the slip rings and are they different colors for positive and negative?
Thanks all for your advice and at least I'm back on the road for now.
