radiator fan switch and electrical questions (long)

I was checking the operation of the cooling fans, since I never seem to hear them come on. I shorted the switch on the left side of the radiator, and BOTH fans immediately come on. Is this right? I thought only one fan was controlled by that switch, and the other is for the A/C.
The electrics in this car have been "modified" to accomodate an aftermarket alarm system, which I have been trying to remove. The alarm system wasn't working when I got the car, so I figured why bother. Some very wierd modifications have been made. For instance, the side blinkers next to the doors were re-wired with speaker wire to the front light clusters, unsuccessfully I might add. I just plugged the original wires back in, and viola! the lights worked just fine... now would on earth would somebody try to re-wire these lights? When I got the car, the turn signals blinked really fast, and only the rear lights worked. Would the alarm system need these weird modifications? I found wire running along the door rubber seals also, causing some leaks also. I can't believe what the idiots were thinking during the installation of the alarm system.
Also, does anybody have or know where I can find a good description of how the front light clusters are supposed to operate? Like which positions in the cluster are meant for the parking, reverse, and blinker lights. I tried the best I could from the description out of the manual, but I dont think they're exactly right. From the best I can tell, the yellow one blinks. One of the clear ones is the reverse light, and the other clear one is the "turning" light.
TIA for any help, Lyle
