a pinhole leak in the bypass hose (a small, right angle hose on the radiator side of the head) or the upper hose.
I had the bypass hose fail on my '88 900S in a peculiar way: it leaked through the fabric reinforcement and splashed off the front of the head onto the battery. I couldn't figure out what it was until I opened the hood when it was hot.
I also had the upper radiator hose fail on my SPG in a more spectacular way a few weeks ago - it developed an aneurism and then a 1-inch split during a 70 mph jaunt up the PA mountains.
You may want to strongly consider replacing all 3 upper hoses. Around $27 (plus shipping) from http://www.sobstory.com.
