1991 900 5 speed 130K
Hi, I bought this car in September 00, from a very finicky nit picker type owner who brought it to saab dealer for every little squeek and rattle since new. In other words, it had been very well cared for. The trans at the time was shifting very well, making no noise. Now ive noticed that i get a helluva whine in 5th, a little less in 4th, and some in third too. 5th is REALLY noisy below 60mph. The trans shifts fine, even into reverse is always smooth. the car gets a lot of city driving, but i dont drive it hard.
The Question:
Should I get the pinion bearing replaced now? I have VERY little money at this time, and I think my parents (who helped me buy the car) will be REALLY ercked if i tell them its up for a $3K trans rebuild. Any good trans place in CT? I live in hartford.
And. is there anything I can do to keep the trans going for a while longer? I replaced the trans oil in january when I noticed the whining. didnt make any difference.
Thanks!
JL
